Doug Hughes

I started my career in the operating room as a student of the San Joaquin Valley College Surgical Technology program in Fresno, CA in 2005. Upon receiving my Associate of Science degree in Surgical Technology, I relocated to the Boise, ID area where I accepted my first full-time position as a Certified Surgical Technologist. It was a great and eye-opening experience. I was able to work in a wide variety of surgical specialties from general surgery, to ENT, to neuro-spine. It wasn't long before I found my niche in orthopedics. I also had the privilege of serving as an infection control board member and was given the opportunity to assist in the planning and renovation of our facility's perioperative services and sterile processing departments. I decided early on to continue my education and work my way up to first assistant because I was fascinated with the profession and with the opportunities that were available with that type of training. I enrolled in the Surgical First Assistant program at Meridian Institute of Surgical Assisting and graduated in mid 2008. Within weeks of graduation I took a position with a private surgical practice in the greater Boise area and specialized in orthopedics and spine. While working as an assistant, I realized that I still wasn't done with my education and returned to school full-time while continuing my first assistant career. I graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Applied Technology degree from Boise State University in 2009. After graduation, I relocated to the Fresno, CA area to pursue a career teaching surgical technology at my alma mater, San Joaquin Valley College. Currently, I am working on my Master's in Education - Curriculum and Instruction at California State University, Fresno.

The Surgical Assistant Resource project began shortly thereafter and has played a key role in helping practicing surgical first assistants, surgical assistant students, and prospective students by adding visibility to the profession and by creating easier access to information relevant to the field. The site was begun as a hobby, but has since been maintained due to my commitment and dedication to the advancement of the field of surgical assisting. I have also recently had the honor and privilege of being called to serve on national Board of Directors of the Association of Surgical Assistants. This is an exciting and pivotal time in this profession and I am grateful to be a part of it. I encourage all non-physician surgical first assistants regardless of professional credential to join with me in the effort to educate the public, unite working professionals, and advance the field of surgical assisting.
